In this months sitrep we look back at the revamped maps that were added in patch v1.6.8 and are providing a form for the community to leave feedback on those maps. We’ll also be showcasing some of the new models and textures for gear in update v1.7. Custom Map support will be coming soon, and we are looking for beta testers to give us feedback on our SDK as well be the first to release custom maps on 1.7s launch; a sign up sheet is located below. And last but not least we are announcing our 2nd Community Contest, where players can compete for special prizes, more details below.

Onward just got more maps!

With the recent v1.6.8 patch we re-released the maps Snowpeak, Abandoned and Jungle!
This update also brought night time variants of Abandoned and Snowpeak, and a brand new map called ‘Turbine’. Turbine takes place on a hydroelectric dam during the day; it’s an interesting large scale map that includes plenty of close quarters areas as well.

Take a look at our patch 1.6.8 release video!
Special thanks to MantisVR for making a great trailer!

We really hope you enjoyed these maps and we’d love to hear your feedback on them. If you have any feedback you wish to share with us, please click here to leave your feedback on a google form.

Monthly Sitrep - August 2019

Monthly Sitrep - August 2019

SitRep_Banner_5.jpg

Hey folks, MrDeath here!

Welcome to our thirteenth sitrep!

In this months sitrep we’ll be going over the status of our remaining maps, Onwards future development roadmap, new content coming in update v1.7, custom maps support, and QA testers for the Quest!

Report on of the last couple of weeks.

  • The Downpour team has mainly been working on gameplay stability, fixing recently introduced issues (like inconsistent frag and flash grenades, crouching, and spectator bugs), and focusing on map performance. A hotfix will be coming later today to address many of these problems and deliver a smoother playing experience.

  • Big memory improvements will be coming in a patch in 1-2 weeks, and should help alleviate crashes when loading into maps. Texture memory has been a major area of needed improvement in Onward since it’s release, and we’ve been working on methods to optimize how we manage it. We are improving this issue by implementing better compression and texture loading management, and these will greatly reduce RAM usage in game.

  • Lastly, a status update on our remaining maps! From a design perspective most of our unreleased maps are ready to go, however we still need to optimize our maps a bit more, so that the game runs smoothly. Our biggest performance cost on these maps are high draw calls. Essentially the more textures, materials and shaders we use per map, the more drawcalls we incur. We are working on minimizing the amount of different materials/shaders by atlasing textures, as well as utilizing new batching techniques such as GPU instancing. We apologize for the inconvenience and delay on these maps, but we assure you we are working to get them to you guys asap! A lot of these performance improvements will be relevant to the community as well, once release custom map support. We will share our findings, so that custom content creators can also make great performing maps.

Info about upcoming AI/CO-OP revamp.

Some of you might be wondering what exactly will be improved with this AI/CO-OP revamp. While we won’t talk about the gamemode related information in this sitrep just yet. We did want to shed some light on what you can expect on the new and improved AI!

Switching from a simple finite state machine system to a utility based AI system.

This switch was made because it will allow for broader variety of actions and responses to the player’s actions. This will make AI be able to choose between 20 different reactions depending on the situation. You better watch out!

Individual AI improvements.

The AI will have much more actions that they can perform and a more realistic eyesight. For example, they’ll have a lower chance of seeing you if you’re further away or if part of your body is hidden behind a wall.
The AI will now move in squads and even have a dedicated squad leader.

Engagement behaviour.

The AI will now try to hit you with more accuracy on semi-automatic if you’re further away. The closer they are the more likely they’ll use bursts. However this is dependent on classes support classes will only use bursts. They will now also throw grenades and smoke grenades depending on the situation.

AI will now take cover.

The AI will now engage or take cover from what they think the direction of fire is depending on how far away the player is or if the player's using a silenced weapon. Depending on the AI’s surroundings, they might crouch behind cover or if there’s no cover anywhere near himself, they’ll crouch or go prone and attempt to return fire if possible. They will no longer walk into the field of fire!

New alert system.

The AI will now react to the player's firing behavior with differences tuned to a player using semi-automatic, burst shots, or if the player attempts to suppress them.
Opposed to the current AI, they’ll now have memory of where the player has been seen last or where they might have heard the player shooting.
They'll also attempt to flee grenades, even trying to find good cover to protect themselves.

AI will have 2 new classes.

These two new classes are a Marksman class and the Support class. The marksman class will try to find a good location before engaging the player. The support class’s role will be mainly suppressing the player. These classes will work together with the already existing rifleman class and the heavy soldier.

New navigation system.

AI squads will work together and try to flank the player instead of boldly running straight towards the player. They'll be more strategic and will even take cover objects into account; favoring them over open paths.

We hope you found this information interesting! This will be all for now but we will likely share about the AI/CO-OP revamp some more in a future sitrep. Sit tight!

More news coming soon on Quest Port .

Onward : Reloaded update released!

Onward : Reloaded update released!

Update v1.6 now known as ‘Reloaded’

Better graphics

Onward ‘Reloaded’ update has finally arrived!  The team has been hard at work putting together new content and refreshing the visuals of the game and the time has come to share it with you. In the interest of providing the best quality we can, we will be staggering the release of maps to ensure that each one gets the proper amount of attention- Onward wouldn’t be what it is without you and you deserve the best we can give.

Map ROLLOUT Schedule

  • Today : we are releasing a selection of Onward’s existing maps; Bazaar Day & Night, Cargo, Shooting Range, Suburbia Day & Night, Subway, and Tanker.

  • Early Next Week - we will see the release of the rest of the classic Onward maps; Downfall Day & Night, Quarantine Day & Night, and Jungle.

  • At the End of Next Week - we will include two new nighttime map variants and our newest map for 1.6; Snowpeak Day & Night, Abandoned Day & Night, Turbine.

Turbine: This hydroelectric dam provides power for the region and serves as a strategic chokepoint that each faction strives to control. MARSOC and Volk forces control opposite ends of the dam. It's time to break the stalemate.

We are all extremely excited for you to experience all the updates to our core content as well as the new additions. We hope you all enjoy this ‘Reloaded’ update and we can’t wait to see you in Onward!

Main Additions recap:

Virtual gunstock Mode

We’ve recently been working on getting a new feature into Onward that’ll allow users with Inside-Out-Tracked VR setups to accurately aim and enjoy the game, called “Virtual Gunstock Mode”. There can be tracking deadzones with Inside-Out-Tracked VR headsets, and without this option players can sometimes lose track of their dominant hand when aiming.

We’ve been working hard to get a Virtual Gunstock feature into Onward to solve this issue. We’ll reveal more information as we get closer to release.

Improved WMR support

We’ve made controller keybinds more intuitive for WMR devices.

Index controller support

The Index controllers will be officially supported in Onward upon release. Picking up objects and interacting with weapons and equipment will still be the same as before, but you will now be able to move every finger individually when your hands aren’t holding anything.

SteamVR input rebinding support

For people who want to customize their input, you will soon be able to rebind all of Onward's input commands in SteamVR in v1.6. This also allows us to support many new devices and control schemes, such as with Windows Mixed Reality.

A new killhouse course in the Shooting Range .

New model for the M16A4 rifle.

New model for the AK-12 rifle.

The v1.6 update will contain these major features :

  • A new animation system, including improved running animation, and a brand new crawling animation

  • More realistic eyes on player models

  • Better lighting / realtime shadows

  • Various performance improvements

  • A complete visual update of the existing maps

  • An updated loadout UI, including weapon stats and details

  • New models for the AK-12 and M16A4 rifles

  • A new watch model, plus the option to wear it on the inside of your wrist

  • A new killhouse course in the Shooting Range

  • Better support for WMR controllers

  • A virtual gunstock option

  • Index controller support

You will be able to expect these following features in the near future!

  • Blood decals

  • Newly reworked and improved scopes

  • More player slots in Operations lobbies, along with improved AI and additions to Co-Op

  • Ammo boxes for Support roles

  • New red dot sight : Aimpoint and PKA-S

Reloaded update Changelog.

Featured updates

  • Greatly improved the visuals with more accurate lighting, realistic shadows, and a new post-processing stack.

Hey guys, MrDeath here!

Welcome to our eleventh sitrep!

In this sitrep we will be teasing new content from v1.6, now known as the ‘Reloaded’ update, showcasing some recent pictures and videos from the community and… something else?

Update v1.6 now known as ‘Reloaded’

Releasing this month.

We are in the final development stages of the Reloaded Update, and are pleased to announce that the Reloaded update will release this month!

New Additions

Virtual gunstock Mode

We have recently been working on getting a new feature into Onward that’ll allow users with Inside-Out-Tracked VR setups to accurately aim and enjoy the game, called “Virtual Gunstock Mode”. There can be tracking deadzones with Inside-Out-Tracked VR headsets, and without this option players can sometimes lose track of their dominant hand when aiming. We’ve been working hard to get a new type of Virtual Gunstock feature into Onward to solve this problem. We’ll reveal more information as we get closer to release.

Improved WMR support

For WMR devices we’ve made controller keybinds more intuitive.

Index controller support

The Index controllers will also be officially supported in Onward upon release. Picking up objects and interacting with weapons and equipment will still be the same as before, but you will now be able to move every finger individually when your hands aren’t holding things.

SteamVR input rebinding support

For people who might want to customize their input, you will soon be able to rebind all of Onward's input commands in SteamVR in v1.6. This also allows us to support many new devices and control schemes, such as with Windows Mixed Reality.

The upcoming update v1.6 AKA “the pretty update”

Now that the Onward has established the majority of it’s core features, we’ll move onto the game’s next phase, which will be highly focused on graphics and visuals. We’ve been working and preparing for v1.6 for a long time now, and to give you an idea on where the game is headed, we are sharing some concept images our maps in this update.

We’ll not only be focusing on improving the overall lighting, but we’re going through all of the existing maps and making them more detailed and visually appealing. You can see the planned changes for Downfall, with terrain, foliage, and interior updates. An upcoming map called Turbine, is also featured below. It’ll be a medium sized map with a full scale dam for you to explore. You’ll be able to use stairs and elevators to enter the dam.

Note: Concept Images

We’re also continually improving and replacing the weapon models in game. Shown below is the new model for the AK12. This weapon features a new and helpful magazine with see through slots for easier ammo management. The weapons we’re going to be replacing and improving next will be the G3 and the G3 auto, M16A4, as well as the Commando 522.

If you missed our last sitrep, here are the major announced features for update v1.6!

  • New animation system, improved running animation and a new crawling animation

  • Blood decals

  • At least 2 new maps

  • Better lighting / realtime shadows

  • Audio rework on all existing maps

  • A complete new revisit to the visuals of the existing maps

  • More players slots in Operations lobbies and many other improvements

  • New models for the commando 522, AK12, G3, and M16A4

  • Newly reworked and improved scopes

Current social gamemode.

The current social gamemode is One in the Chamber! In this gamemode the player has to fight to survive with only one bullet in the chamber. If you miss, you will have to use your knife to kill your opponent. The last to survive wins the match!

This gamemode will continue to be playable until the tenth of March.

In a recent patch we reworked how social modes are rotated. Previously a social mode was always active, and the current mode rotated once every two weeks. Now, a new social mode will activate on the first Friday of every month, and last for ten days, before deactivating again. The time left until the next social mode, and the time left in the current social mode is displayed in game. This change was implemented to place more emphasis on our core game modes.

Monthly Sitrep - January 2019

Monthly Sitrep - January 2019

SitRep_Banner_5.jpg

Hey guys, MrDeath here!

Welcome to our seventh sitrep! In this sitrep we'll talk about how game modes are going to be set up in update v1.5, a look back at 2018, and a look at some exciting stuff coming from the community.

A peek into update v1.5

We’re really excited about bringing new ways to play to Onward in v1.5, and in order to do so, we’re changing things up a little -

The PVP gamemodes that have been included in Onward since launch (Uplink and Escort) are now what we’ll be referring to as core gamemodes. Core gamemodes bring the classic Onward milsim-esque experience that our playerbase knows and loves, with tough and challenging gameplay tailored for players that want a hardcore experience. We’ve been working on a new core gamemode to add to that roster in v1.5 which we’ll give some more information about closer to launch of the update. This is the gamemode that we’ve previously teased, it’s a challenging objective based gamemode with respawns and we think you guys will really enjoy it.

Now that we’ve explained what core gamemodes are in Onward, it’s time to talk about the other end of the spectrum. Onward has always been a great provider of challenging and high-stakes gameplay, but we appreciate that from time to time our players would like to play a slightly more experimental and relaxed Onward experience (an example being the recent Spec Ops mode). We’ve been hard at work reworking the game to allow us to rapidly prototype and develop brand new gamemodes (including Free for All modes). These modes we’ve created are a little different than the core Onward gameplay, so we’re going to be dubbing these social gamemodes.

To support all these new gamemodes, and to ensure that the game doesn’t get divided too much amongst our playerbase, we’re moving to a rotating playlist-based approach for the social modes. The social option on the main menu will let our players play the new social modes, which will feature a different one on a bi-weekly basis (every 2 weeks). This will allow us to potentially introduce new modes in the future and make changes to the ones we have, based on player feedback.

The core option will feature the core modes (Uplink, Escort and the new respawn-based mode) and the co-op option will let users play the co-op VS AI Operations modes we currently have in the game.

The visuals in the video above are still work in progress.

Downpour interactive team

Downpour has grown a lot since 2018 and we really think you'll like what we've been working on. Last year was a splendid year, and we look forward to an even more amazing 2019. We’re proud to have such an amazing community, Here’s to all of you!

Community spotlight.

Onward Rookie Bootcamp & AltspaceVR

A group of Onward league players have formed a community to help rookies get into the game. They have an active discord (Onward Rookie Bootcamp) where new players can ask for help and get training from experienced veterans. ORB put together a Rookie tournament to show off their new skills and get a taste of playing in a league match.

The Hive is a VR talk show, produced inside VR, and they are hosting the tournament inside Altspace, a great VR and 2D social platform. How will this work? A match will be streamed live and fed inside of Altspace. The Hive team have recreated the Onward map, Suburbia, in Altspace so the audience can join in VR, check out the map, and watch the live stream of the rookie tournament. SL33PY, TFH, and Nightfiree will be hosting and casting the tournament together with the help of other VR Master League casters and cameramen to bring you all the action, and explain the nuances of this tactical, squad-based VR FPS.

This will also be livestreamed, so people can watch a livestream of people in VR watching a livestream of people playing Onward. VR-ception much?!?

You can watch the tournament on The Hive VR’s YouTube channel or get into Altspace and join the live event as a part of the interactive audience.

Onward VR Master League season 7.

VRML is happy to announce Onward's 7th Season which is planned as such:

  • Jan 14th: Season Start

  • Feb 11th to 24th: Button Cup (1)

  • March 4th to 10th: All-Star Tournament

  • March 18th to 31st: Button Cup (2)

  • April 28th: Season End

  • May 4th-5th: Challenger Cup

  • May 11th-12th: Round-robin

  • May 18th-19th: Semis-Finals

Season will last 15 weeks (14 active weeks). With this planning, we're estimating that each teams "should" be playing 1 "repeat-match" (as much as possible) in their respective MMR range. The Button Cup was so much fun, having 2 in one season might allow for a "rematch".

For the All-star tournament we will have key league players creating their own rosters (can't pick a player from their team). We're hoping we can also have a "Rookies All-star Tournament" as well (in parallel). We're also thinking of bringing on new Onward game modes (for fun and promotion) during that event (if it's ready).

The future of Onward.

After we release update v1.5, we’ll immediately continue work on v1.6, which will be known as the ‘Pretty Update’.

The main features coming to v1.6 :

  • Better lighting

  • Workshop support

  • Ranking

Monthly Sitrep - December 2018

Monthly Sitrep - December 2018

SitRep_Banner_5.jpg

Hey guys, MrDeath here!

Welcome to our sixth sitrep! In this sitrep we'll introduce you to three new Downpour Interactive members, talk about the upcoming release of update v1.5, Talk about the VRML WildCard cup and what’s to come to future updates of Onward.

Three new Downpour Interactive team members!

Brian

Hello, my name is Brian and I'm a programmer on the Downpour Interactive team. Prior to joining the team, I worked on Kerbal Space Program with Squad for two years, and I put in another two years at Valve Software. I have also been working on freelance projects since I was twelve, which...let's just say was a long time ago!

  • Favorite thing to work on in Onward?

I'm a general programmer, so I tend to wear whatever hat is necessary to get the job done. However, I particularly enjoy performance optimization - profiling and identifying areas that can be optimized is a lot like fine-tuning a car.

  • Which weapon in Onward do you like the most?

I am honestly a terrible shot, so I tend to lean on weapons that can spray and pray. I really like the MP5 because it can fulfill this role, but also flip to semi-automatic and accurately pick off targets at medium range.

  • What's your favorite game?

This is tough, I've played and enjoyed a lot of games, but I tend to highly value procedural content and replayability. This puts games like Path of Exile, Elite Dangerous, and No Man's Sky near the top of my list.

  • Which map in Onward do you like the most?

I enjoy the close quarters claustrophobic feeling evoked by maps like Cargo and Tanker. I particularly enjoy Tanker because it is set at night, which opens up more tactical possibilities.

  • What feature do you want to be added to Onward?

Due to my aforementioned questionable aim, I really like playing Operations cooperatively with my friends. I would like to see additional cooperative Operation modes that are more objective-based.

Orlando

Hey, my name is Orlando and I’m a 3D artist here at Downpour Interactive. I recently joined after working on Star Citizen/Squadron 42 for 2 and a half years.

  • Favorite thing to work on in Onward?

While I’ll predominantly be working on weapons, I enjoy making props and vehicles too! Any hard surface/mechanical modelling will grab my interest.

  • Which weapon in Onward do you like the most?

I’ve always been a fan of the FAMAS. Flashbacks to Metal Gear Solid and Snaaake, but it was Rainbow Six Vegas that cemented it as my go to weapon!

  • Whats your favorite game?

I tend to obsess over competitive multiplayer games, although that isn’t to suggest that I’m any good at them! For the past couple of years it’s been Rainbow Six: Siege and Overwatch. I do miss the days of Battlefield 3 though!

  • Which map in Onward do you like the most?

If I had to settle on one, it’d be Bazaar. A mix of close quarters and mid-long range engagements is where it’s at!

  • What feature do you want added to Onward?

More weapon customization (attachments, camo, etc) or vehicular combat

Thomas

Hello! My name is Thomas, and I'm a programmer on the Downpour Interactive team working on this great game! Before joining the team, I've worked at several small gaming startups and done freelance game development work on various projects.

  • Favorite thing to work on in Onward?

I really enjoy working on gameplay-related features not just in Onward, but in games as a whole. This includes new weapons, options, and other playable content.

  • Which weapon in Onward do you like the most?

I'm a fan of lighter weapons, so I like the pistols and grenades. If I had to choose one, it would be the C4 since there are a lot of ways to use it creatively and strategically.

  • What's your favorite game?

This is very tough to answer, but I prefer single-player games, with platformers and RPGs being my favorite genres. I also enjoy colorful, imaginative games that bring you into whole new worlds. It's too hard for me list a single favorite, but Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Super Mario Sunshine, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time are among my favorites.

  • Which map in Onward do you like the most?

I love nature and lush environments, so Jungle hands down. Jungle really makes you feel like you're fighting in the wilderness, and the varied environment makes developing a game plan interesting.

  • What feature do you want added to Onward?

Vehicles, such as cars, tanks, and helicopters.

SitRep_Banner_5.jpg

Hey guys, MrDeath here!

Welcome to our fifth sitrep! In this sitrep we'll talk about the release of update v1.4, CALL TO ARMS event announcement, Onward Merch store and what’s to come to Onward.

Update v1.4 released.

This update contains lots of new content and features! We gave the UI a fresh redesign, added several new pickups and features (C4, molotov, new pistol, pistol attachments), a new adrenaline-inducing gamemode named ‘Spec Ops’, reworked the Subway map to include new entrances for better map balance and more!

After releasing the v1.4 update, we decided to revert the update due the amount of issues it included. After working hard on fixing those issues, we re-released the update on Wednesday!
